Can you make money from the Music Business?

Ann Harrison

Ann Harrison was born in Wales and was educated there and later at Guildford. She qualified as a solicitor in 1983 and was a commercial litigation lawyer until 1988 when she switched to work in entertainment law, specialising in music. Ann worked for a large firm in London, becoming a partner there in 1991, and head of the music group in 2001, before setting up as a legal consultant when Harrisons opened for business in May 2003.

Ann has always preferred working for the creative/entrepreneurial side of the industry and having her own business gave her the opportunity to do this. Her clients range across the entire music spectrum. For reasons of confidentiality it is not possible to publish the names of all clients but with their kind permission, some of Harrisons clients past and present include: Suede, Bernard Butler, Robbie Williams; P J Harvey; Duffy; Caspa, Benga/Magnetic Man; Roni Size; The Staves; Fink; Field Music.

Ann advises on all aspects of the music business and the use of music in the wider entertainment industry. A large part of her work is establishing which rights her clients need protection for and then reviewing, drafting and negotiating agreements. She provides a lot of strategic advice as to the types of deals to go for and uses her experience to try and steer people away from the pitfalls.

Ann is the author of the UK's leading guide to the legal and commercial aspects of the music industry - Music: The Business: The Essential Guide To The Law And The Deals. She recently appeared as an industry expert and was script advisor to the BBC4 programme "The World's Richest songs".
